ATEH HUNTS FOR A DREAM
"ATEH HUNTS FOR A DREAM" is an associative message based on my visual interpretation of the central character of "Dictionary of the Khazars", a novel by the Serbian writer Milorad Pavic. An outstanding literary work (one of the most mystical works in the twentieth century) is closely associated with myth-making, and more precisely, it is a myth in itself that does not have a clear border with reality. The Khazar princess Ateh is a focal point of the cosmic and magical origin of human nature. She becomes a worship object and the leader of the Khazar sect of "dreams catchers", participants of which can enter into other people's dreams and control them, travel in time through the dreams of people of different eras in the past, present and future. Princess Ateh finds her immortality in this endless movement.
The picture is painted using a mixed technique. The graphic element - smoke - is performed using the pointillism technique and, depending on the light, it becomes brighter, almost shines or dims, as if it lives by its variability, turning into either a bird or folds of fabric, mesmerizing with its static dynamics.
The crystal lattice of the dress, as a self-contained artistic plane, personifies the transition from the rational awake to the mystical, dream expanse.
And a spectator is transferred there after the bark-sleeve composed of fragments of reality. The bark glides over the crystal surface into the unknown hidden inside beyond the border of the canvas.
The painting was created at the intersection of crystallism and pop surrealism, a genre that is also very close to me. Ateh should be considered as an atemporal symbol; a pop icon that can simultaneously shine in club neon and transfer the spectator's consciousness to the origins, cultural roots, ancient pagan rites and shamanism.
